Nitrate in well water
Nitrate in well water matters most for infants under six months and during pregnancy. Wells near farms, septic systems, or fertilizer use should test nitrate at a certified lab.
Boiling water with high nitrate makes it worse — do not boil as a fix. Get a number from a lab first.
What to test
- Nitrate (and nitrite) on a raw well sample.
- Retest annually if you are on a private well in an agricultural area.
