Bacteria in well water

Bacteria in a private well is a health warning — not a taste issue. Use a state-certified lab and sterile bottles; strips are not a substitute.

Test after flooding, a new well, plumbing work, or any stomach illness in the household. Hold times are short; plan drop-off or overnight shipping carefully.

What to test

  • Total coliform and E. coli on a sterile sample from the lab's instructions.
  • Retest after any shock chlorination or repair.

County health / Extension may test wells cheap or free. Certified labs: EPA certified laboratory contacts.
