Well vs city water testing
Private wells and city tap water are different systems with different risks. Match the test to the source — bacteria and nitrate for wells; lead and copper from plumbing for city taps.
Your utility's Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) summarizes regulated contaminants in treated city water. It does not replace testing your own tap or a private well.
Private well
You own the well and the plumbing to the house. No utility sends you a CCR. County health, Cooperative Extension, or NGWA (855-420-9355) can point you to local programs. Common starting tests: bacteria (coliform) and nitrate.
City / municipal tap
The utility treats water to federal standards, but lead and copper can still come from your home's pipes and fixtures. A first-draw lead sample at a certified lab answers the homeowner question the CCR cannot.
PFAS and special panels
PFAS is often a separate certified panel for both wells and city water. Confirm scope with the lab before you order bottles.
