Mail-in vs drop-off water testing
Mail-in works when the lab ships the right bottles and you can meet the hold time. Drop-off or lab collection is safer when timing is tight or a rule says the lab must sample.
Both can be certified work. The difference is logistics and who touches the sample.
Mail-in is enough when
- The lab is certified for your analytes and accepts residential ship-ins.
- You can chill, overnight, and arrive inside the hold time on the chain-of-custody form.
- No statute requires an on-site certified collector.
Prefer local drop-off or collection when
- Bacteria hold times are short and shipping is unreliable.
- Real estate or state rules (for example NJ PWTA-style programs) require lab collection.
- You need same-day receipt or witnessed sampling.
Ask the lab which option they support before you fill anything. Official lists: EPA certified laboratory contacts. County health / Extension can say what they accept locally.
